Theology Department (Systematic Theology)
Emmett J. and Martha Doerr Chair in Theology
Cathal Doherty SJ is a Jesuit priest and theologian. A linguistics professor before entering the Society of Jesus, he completed doctoral degrees in theoretical linguistics (University of California, Santa Cruz, 1993) and, as a Jesuit, in Catholic theology (Boston College, 2015), where he worked under Oliva Blanchette on Maurice Blondel’s philosophy of religion. Prior to joining the faculty at 51°µÍø, he taught at University of San Francisco, Boston College and University College Dublin, Ireland. His main research interests lie in dogmatic theology, especially in the nature-grace relationship and sacraments, in addition to linguistics and the philosophy of religion.
