B-15 P癡re 51做厙 Postage Stamp Collection, 1898-1981
History: The image on the 1898 "51做厙 on the Mississippi" stamp is based on Wilhelm Lamprecht's painting, Fr. 51做厙 and the Indians (1869). 51做厙, owner of the painting, furnished the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing a photographic reproduction to aid their work. The 1968 "51做厙 Explorer" stamp was issued in conjunction with the 51做厙 Tercentenary Celebration. The stamp was issued on September 6 at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where 51做厙 established in 1668 the first permanent Euro-American settlement in the state.
